How to get a career in IT

Learn accelerated job search techniques that will get you that desired job in IT!

Determine what you want from your job

Think to yourself about what you want from your job. Then write down a list of keywords that would attract you to that job. This will consist of the industry you wish to work in, how much on the job training you want, the approximate salary you are looking for etc. Then when you come to your job search you can eliminate jobs on the basis of them not containing at least some of your keywords which will save you a lot of time in your job search.

Check out what's out there

Now that your armed with your list of keywords you can start looking at what's out there that will suit your needs.

Now write your C.V and cover letter

Now you have determined the kind of job you want and have a list of jobs that you could potentially apply for you can go about writing your cover letter. It is imperative that you don't just base this around what you want and the skills you have but also look at what the employer is looking for. Make sure everything they are asking for is included in your cover letter and C.V, do not give employers an excuse to disregard your application on the basis that you don't fit their criteria. In the same breath do not fabricate skills and experience, pull on the experience you have and taylor it to what they want. For example if you were applying for a Management IT Consultants position but have had no previous Management roles, think of times when in your past jobs you have had to manage people and products and include this in your cover letter and/or C.V.
